Commander of NATO JFC Brunssum to meet with Latvian defense, military officials

RIGA, April 21 (LETA) - Defense Ministry state secretary Janis Garisons and the Chief of Defense, Major General Leonids Kalnins, are due to meet with General Salvatore Farina, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum), today, LETA was told at the press office of the Defense Ministry.

The meetings are expected to focus on current international and regional security issues, extended allied presence and the arrival of the Canada-led NATO battle group in Latvia.

General Farina will also visit the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Latvia and meet with its commander Eriks Naglis.

As reported, NATO leaders agreed at a summit in July 2016 to boost their defenses in the east to face an increasingly assertive Russia. Deployment of NATO soldiers will begin this year and proceed on a rotational basis. The Canada-led battle group in Latvia will include about 1,000 soldiers.
