    Congressman Royce voices readiness to promote U.S.-Latvia cooperation in countering hybrid threats

    RIGA, Aug 10 (LETA) - U.S. Congressman Ed Royce, chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, during a meeting with Foreign Ministry State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics today voiced readiness to promote U.S.-Latvia cooperation in countering hybrid threats and threats to the media environment, LETA was told at the ministry.

    During the conversation with the U.S. congressman, Pildegovics praised the support of the U.S. President’s Administration and Congress to Latvia and the Baltic region in general. Latvia is grateful to the U.S. for the NATO decisions regarding the alliance’s enhanced presence in the Baltic states and is interested in boosted U.S. military presence in the Baltics on land, at sea and in the air.

    The state secretary also indicated that Latvia is determined to provide its contribution to strengthening security, including by raising its defense budget to 2 percent of GDP by 2018 and continuing participation in multinational operations.

    Congressman Royce expressed firm support for Latvia’s security. He said that the U.S. Congress is aware of the security challenges currently facing Latvia and other countries of the region. The Congress has already demonstrated its support by passing a resolution on the significance of NATO’s Article 5 and approving tougher sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea.

    Pildegovics called for the U.S. Congress and Administration’s continued support for cooperation programs with Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries, stressing that Latvia has already developed successful cooperation in this area which has to be continued.

    Both Pildegovics and Royce agreed on the importance of EU-U.S. cooperation in security, business and trade, as well as education.

    Congressman Royce has arrived in Latvia as part of this Baltic tour. The agenda of his visit includes meetings with several state officials, as well as visits to the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence and Adazi Military Base.
