Additional Canadian troops, equipment arrive in Latvia

RIGA, Aug 13 (LETA) – On Saturday more Canadian troops and equipment arrived at the Riga port to ensure additional support to the military exercise of Canadian-led NATO multinational battle group and other allies, the Latvian Defense Ministry reported.

The Canadian armed forces have sent about 100 troops of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, four M777 howitzers and other equipment that will be used for the exercise.

The goal of the Canadian armed forces is to support the multinational battle group during the exercise in the coming fall, including international military exercise Silver Arrow.

As reported, NATO leaders at the summit in Warsaw in July 2016 approved the deployment of four multinational battalions to the Baltic countries and Poland as part of measures meant to deter Russia from possible aggression.

Canada is the lead nation for the battalion to be stationed in Latvia. Half of the battalion will be Canadian soldiers, and it will also include soldiers from Albania, Italy, Spain, Poland and Slovenia.
