Latvia gets from Austria second-hand 120 mm mortars

RIGA, Oct 4 (LETA) – The Latvian National Armed Forces have received from Austria also second-hand 120 mm mortars, the Latvian Defense Ministry said.

The mortars were delivered to Latvia already this summer and will be used by both regular units of the National Armed Forces and the Home Guard.

"For the reasons of operations security", the ministry did not disclose the number of mortars but said that all weapons that it was to receive under the agreement had been delivered.

The Latvian army has already been using 120 mm mortars and had showed them also during the traditional military parades held annually on November 18, the Latvian Independence Day.

Mortars were to be supplied to Latvia under the agreement between the Latvian Defense Ministry and the Austrian Defense and Sports Ministry on purchase of self-propelled artillery systems, which includes self-propelled howitzers, fire control center and driver training platform. Altogether 47 units of weaponry worth a total of EUR 6 million are to be purchased under the agreement.

Austria delivered the first M109 self-propelled 155 mm howitzers to the Latvian National Armed Forces on October 2 this year. The howitzers were modernized between 2003 and 2007, and had not been in use since then.
