Rain has helped to contain fire in Adazi military ground

RIGA, June 12 (LETA) – Rain on Monday evening has helped to contain the fire that broke out in Adazi military field on Sunday, said State Forest Service representative Zigmunds Jaunkikis.

He said that rain started after 10 p.m. on Monday and it efficiently put out the blaze. This morning the territory will be inspected to make sure that the flames are not spreading further.

Asked about the area the fire has covered, he said that definitely it is more than 300 hectares.

Chief of Defense Leonids Kalnins said in an interview with the Latvian public radio today that there is no open flame any more, but some smoldering in the moss is possible.

The cause of the fire will still be established. Kalnins said that there had been intense military activity in the territory, but the fire had broken out in a different sector.

As reported, the fire in Adazi military training area broke out around noon on Sunday.

Although firefighters had succeeded in containing the flames at one point on Monday, the blaze started spreading again as the wind gathered strength, so the rescue works resumed with increased intensity in the afternoon.

Fighting the fire in Adazi were personnel and transport equipment of State Forest Service and the State Fire and Rescue Service and troops and a helicopter of the National Armed Forces were involved in the operation as well.
