Estonian defmin to discuss development of defense cooperation with EU colleagues

TALLINN, May 18, BNS - Estonian Minister of Defense Margus Tsahkna will participate in a meeting of the European Union defense ministers in Brussels on Thursday that will determine the milestones of defense cooperation during Estonia's EU presidency.

The main topics to be discussed at the meeting include implementation of the EU global strategy. The defense ministers will discuss the implementation of the capability of joint leadership of EU military missions, the future of using EU battle groups and the development of coordinated defense planning, spokespeople for the Estonian Ministry of Defense said.

Another topic to be discussed at the meeting is the launch of permanent structured cooperation (PESCO). Stipulated by the Lisbon treaty, PESCO is a EU defense cooperation model in which a core group of countries assumes more binding commitments in the field of defense.

The Estonian government at a meeting held in Brussels on May 3 decided that Estonia will join the European Union framework for permanent structured cooperation if the member states decide to launch the initiative. PESCO may be launched already during the Estonian EU presidency.

The meeting of European defense ministers will also include a discussion about the cooperation between EU and NATO and secretary general of NATO Jens Stoltenberg will take part in it. After the meeting, a joint working loncheon for the EU defense and interior ministers is scheduled to take place, which will focus primarily on the fight against terrorism.

This will be the last official meeting of EU defense ministers before the start of Estonia's EU presidency.
