Russian DefMin denies violation of Estonian airspace

TALLINN, Mar 12, BNS - The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the Russian Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft did not violated Estonian airspace on Monday.

The Russian Ministry of Defense on Monday said that the IL-76 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces on Monday carried out a scheduled flight to the Kaliningrad region. "The flight took place along a previously agreed route with a switched on transponder," the ministry said. The Russian Defense Ministry reaffirmed that the flight took place in strict accordance with international rules and did not violated the air boundary of other countries.

The ministry also confirmed that the crew of the plane communicated with Estonian air traffic controllers during the flight.

The headquarters of the Estonian defense forces said that an Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defense entered the Estonian airspace near the island of Vaindloo in the Gulf of Finland without permission on Monday noon. The plane spent approximately a minute in Estonian airspace, its transponder was turned on and it had presented a flight plan. The aircraft had no radio contact with the Estonian Air Navigation Services.

The Foreign Ministry on Monday summoned the Russian ambassador to Estonia and handed them a diplomatic note.

This is the first time that a Russian aircraft has made an unauthorized incursion into the Estonian airspace this year.

Russian aircraft violated the Estonian air boundary on two occasions in 2017.
