Lithuania makes every effort to be ready to fight potential aggressor - parlt speaker

VILNIUS, May 19, BNS - Lithuania is making all possible efforts, including raising its defense spending to 2.07 percent of GDP in 2018, to be ready to face a potential aggressor, Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, told General Raymond Thomas, commander of the United States Special Operations Command, on Friday.

"We are making every effort to be ready to fight a potential aggressor. We have the political will, too: our political parties strongly support plans to increase defense spending. Our defense spending next year will reach 2.07 percent of GDP," Pranckietis said in a statement issued by his office after the meeting.

The speaker of the parliament also underlined that the US remained Lithuania's key strategic partner in ensuring national security.

After the meeting, Thomas was to drive to Pabrade, a training area close to Vilnius, to observe Flaming Sword 2017, an international special operations forces exercise that includes US troops.

Lithuanian officials in early 2017 confirmed the deployment of US special operations forces in the Baltic Sea region.
