Grybauskaite calls for active US involvement in military exercises in Lithuania

VILNIUS, Mar 13, BNS - President Dalia Grybauskaite, on a visit to the United States, on Wednesday called for active US involvement in military exercises in Lithuania and Poland to help ensure the defendability of the so-called "Suwalki gap".

"Lithuania is interested in the active involvement of national guard troops in joint exercises with NATO battalions deployed to Lithuania and Poland, which would help to secure the Suwalki defendability," Grybauskaite's office said in a press release after the president visited the Pennsylvania National Guard headquarters and met with Commander Major General Anthony J. Carrelli.

The Suwalki gap is a land strip of around 100 kilometers on the Lithuanian-Polish border that is wedged between the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on the west and Belarus on the east.

In a military conflict, the seizure of the land corridor would cut off the land route for NATO allies to the Baltic countries.

"The Pennsylvania National Guard has a strong cyber capacity and is interested in contributing to the regional cyber security center to be set up in Kaunas through expert knowledge and experience," the president's office said.

"The Pennsylvania National Guard is actively engaged in training Lithuanian officers and mechanized infantry units as well as in modernizing Lithuania's military infrastructure," it said.
