    Latvian president stresses role of local governments in improving people's quality of life

    RIGA, Aug 11 (LETA) - The ability of local governments to take responsible decisions will be crucial for improving people's quality of life, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said during the meeting with the local municipal and business representatives in Ludza, south-eastern Latvia, on Friday.

    According to the Latvian president's office, Vejonis said that local governments had to take responsible decisions when it came to improving people's quality of life in the long-term - providing jobs as well as good-quality education and health care.

    Ludza municipal representatives told the Latvian president about their endeavors to improve availability of municipal services to the local population, to develop business environment and to organize cultural events in the municipality.

    The subjects discussed with the business representatives included the effects of the tax reform on business.

    Vejonis also visited Ariols company, the largest taxpayer in Ludza, and went to the local museum, the handicrafts center, the renovated Ludza Great Synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in the Baltics, and met with representatives of the local youth club.

    In conclusion of his visit, the Latvian president will deliver opening remarks at the concert on the 840th anniversary of the Ludza city, the president's office said.
