Regional infrastructure should be based on market principles – Kucinskis

RIGA, Aug 11 (LETA) – Regional infrastructure should be based on market principles, said Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) during his meeting with Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas and Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis at the Incukalns gas storage facility in Latvia today.

Kucinskis’ spokesman Andrejs Vaivars said that during the meeting the three prime ministers got acquainted with operations of the Incukalns underground gas storage facility and discussed regional cooperation in energy. Kucinskis underscored that regional infrastructure should be based on market principles as "it is the only way we can achieve the best possible result – the lowest possible price for gas consumers".

The Baltic prime ministers noted the regional importance of the Incukalns gas storage facility that will promote operation of the regional gas market and security of gas supplies. The prime ministers shared an opinion that the solution should be economically sustainable in order to develop a fully functioning regional gas market and ensure security of gas supplies to the Baltic states.

Vaivars explained that during the meeting in Tallinn early this year the prime minister agreed on a necessity to get acquainted with the strategic energy objects in all the three countries. The three prime ministers have already visited Paldiski and Klaipeda in Lithuania.
