Chances are great for Dombrovskis to become new EU minister of economy and finance - Steinbuka

RIGA, Sept 14 (LETA) - Chances are great that Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity), the Vice President of the European Commission and Latvia's former prime minister, will become the new EU minister of economy and finance, Inna Steinbuka, the head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia, said on the morning news program of the public Latvian Television on Thursday.

She said that the proposal to create the position of the EU minister of economy and finance was commendable and Dombrovskis was a likely candidate because he had the required experience and fitted the job description.

Steinbuka said she would like to see Dombrovskis appointed to this post and the possibility was quite realistic, although it was too early for any speculations.

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, yesterday said in his State of the Union speech to the European Parliament that the EU should have a minister of economy and finance.

"We need a European Minister of Economy and Finance: a European Minister that promotes and supports structural reforms in our Member States," Juncker said. "I am not calling for a new position just for the sake of it. I am calling for efficiency. The Commissioner for economic and financial affairs - ideally also a Vice-President - should assume the role of Economy and Finance Minister. He or she should also preside the Eurogroup," he said.
