Strong majority in Latvia support common EU defense and security policy - survey

RIGA, Jan 3 (LETA) - According to a Eurobarometer survey conducted in November, a strong majority in Latvia support a common EU defense and security policy.

According to the survey, 84 percent of Latvian residents support a common EU defense and security policy, while nine percent are against and seven percent do not have a point of view on this matter. Meanwhile, 82 percent of Estonian residents and 87 percent of Lithuanian residents support a common EU defense and security policy, while the EU average is 75 percent.

Meanwhile, 66 percent of Latvian residents support a common EU defense policy, while 22 percent are against and 12 percent did not have a point of view on this matter. Meanwhile, 63 percent of Estonian residents and 79 percent of Lithuanian residents support a common EU foreign policy, while the EU average is 66 percent.

76 percent of Latvian residents support the EU's economic and monetary union with a common currency, while 18 percent are against and six percent did not have a point of view on this matter. Meanwhile, 84 percent of Estonian residents and 68 percent of Lithuanian residents support the EU's economic and monetary union with a common currency.

In regards to EU expansion in the future by allowing other countries to join, 44 percent of Latvian residents support the idea, while 44 percent are against and 12 percent do not have a point of view on this matter. Meanwhile, 41 percent of Estonian residents are against further EU expansion, while just 22 percent of Lithuanian residents are against.

49 percent of Latvian residents support a common EU migration policy, while 40 percent are against and 11 percent did not have a point of view on this matter. Meanwhile, 73 percent of Lithuanian residents support a common EU migration policy, compared to 44 percent in Estonia and 69 percent in the EU.

Meanwhile, 71 percent of Latvian residents support a common EU energy policy, while 14 percent are against and 15 percent did not have a point of view on this matter. 83 percent of Lithuanian residents support a common EU energy policy, compared to 71 percent in Estonia and 71 percent on average in the EU.
