Saeima committees to consider banning former KGB agents and informers from running in local elections

RIGA, Feb 8 (LETA) - Saeima today forwarded to committees a bill that bans former KGB agents and informers from running in local elections.

At the moment, persons who were employed by the Soviet Union or foreign security, intelligence or counterintelligence services are not allowed to participate in local elections.

The amendments forwarded to Saeima committees today propose expanding the restrictions by also applying them to said services' agents and informers.

The amendments have been drawn up by MPs Artuss Kaimins (KPV LV), Ilmars Latkovskis, Rihards Kols (National Alliance), Ritvars Jansons (National Alliance), Ringolds Balodis, Edvards Smiltens, Imants Paradnieks (National Alliance), Inese Laizane (National Alliance) and Atis Lejins (Unity).

The objective of the amendments is to protect the democratic government, national security, and territorial integrity of Latvia, says the bill's preamble.
