Flu intensity triples in Latvia this week, two more fatalities reported

RIGA, Feb 9 (LETA) - This week hospitals in Latvia have reported two more fatalities from flu which brings the total death toll in this flu season to three, according to the data of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

Both patients, who died from flu this week, were older than 50 years and had not been vaccinated. They also had chronic diseases and other risk factors, just like the first flu fatality recorded in early January.

Flu intensity in Latvia has nearly tripled in a week's time, reaching 86.7 flu cases per 100,000 population. Still, this rate is much lower than the average flu intensity observed during the last five flu seasons.

Out of the ten largest cities in Latvia monitored by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, nine have reported new flu cases this week. The number of flu patients has risen above the epidemic threshold in Daugavpils, Liepaja and Ventspils while the situation in the Latvian capital Riga is close to the threshold with 93.7 flu cases per 100,000 population.
