Latvia, Estonia plan joint military procurement - Latvian defense chief

RIGA, March 14 (LETA) - Latvia and Estonia plan joint military procurement, Latvian Chief of Defense Leonids Kalnins told the press after the meeting with his Estonian counterpart Riho Terras.

Kalnins said Latvia and Estonia were neighbors and had the same goals therefore it would be strange if they did not cooperate closely in defense matters.

The defense chiefs of both countries discussed details of bilateral cooperation, including in military training, and exchanged opinions about joint Baltic representation in NATO.

"Cooperation and joint training of the personnel is the most effective way for the Baltic states to achieve their objectives," the Latvian defense chief said.

He gave an affirmative answer to the question about whether Latvia and Estonia planned joint military procurement but for now refused to specify the likely subject-matters of joint tenders.

The commander of the Estonian Defense Forces told the press that Latvia was among Estonia's closest neighbors and spoke approvingly of the joint military exercises organized by the two countries in recent years.

Terras confirmed that military procurement had been discussed during the meeting but would not give any detailed comments.

The Estonian defense chief is visiting Latvia on March 14-15 to discuss with Latvian officials bilateral defense cooperation and the international and regional security matters.
