Latvian foreign minister congratulates new U.S. Secretary of State

RIGA, May 16 (LETA) - Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics today had a telephone conversation with the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and congratulated him on taking office, the Foreign Ministry said.

The recent U.S.-Baltic States Summit, the upcoming NATO Summit in Brussels, and the Nord Stream 2 project were discussed during the conversation.

Rinkevics thanked the U.S. for its support for the strengthening of security in the Baltic states and underlined the need for making effort to put in practice the declaration of the U.S.-Baltic States Summit adopted by the leaders of the four countries in Washington D.C. on April 3.

He noted that at the NATO Summit to be held in Brussels this coming July, Latvia would expect decisions on the integration of the sea and air support elements in the current NATO defense arrangements in the Baltic Sea region.

The parties shared opinions and were unanimous about the negative geopolitical impact of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project on the Baltic Sea region.

The Latvian foreign Minister recalled Pompeo's visit to Latvia in September 2016, when he was a U.S. Congressman, and invited him to visit Latvia in the capacity of the U.S. Secretary of State.
