    Major traffic restrictions planned in Riga for Lattelecom Marathon this weekend

    RIGA, May 17 (LETA) - Major traffic restrictions are planned in the Latvian capital for Lattelecom Riga Marathon which will take place this weekend, the Riga City Council announced.

    The city government warned that the November 11 Embankment will be closed for the traffic already on the evening of May 18, and no traffic will be allowed on the Vansu (Suspension) Bridge on May 19 during the main marathon event. Various restrictions on the traffic along other bridges across the Daugava River will be in effect both on May 18 and May 19. Some of the public transport routes will be altered during the weekend and delays are possible.

    Lattelecom Riga Marathon is held in the Latvian capital annually since 1991. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has awarded the Road Race Bronze Label to Lattelecom Riga Marathon.

    This year the marathon will take place on May 19-20. The prize fund will be the biggest in the history of the Riga marathon - EUR 75,000, of which EUR 50,000 will be distributed among the runners with the five best results.

    Last year over 33,000 runners from 70 countries participated in Lattelecom Riga Marathon.
