Waste management tariffs to increase substantially in municipalities around Riga

RIGA, Dec 3 (LETA) - Waste management company Eco Baltia Grupa will increase waste management tariffs for clients in Tervete, Babite, Marupe, Adazi, Salaspils and Sigulda municipalities by EUR 0.79 to EUR 3 per cubic meters as of next year, Eco Baltia Group's environmental management head Janis Aizbalts told LETA.

As a result, the tariff per one trash can of 0.24 cubic meters will increase by EUR 1.19 to EUR 0.75, explained Aizbalts.

Likewise, waste management company Clean R reports that, due to higher natural resources tax and an increase in Getlini landfill's prices, waste management tariffs in Riga, Lielvarde, Ogre and Kegums will increase by approximately EUR 4.17 per cubic meter.

"Getlini EKO's higher prices of landfill services will inevitably affect waste management tariffs for residents. Even with the development of waste sorting infrastructure and investments in containers for recyclable waste, up to 70 percent of household waste ends up in landfills," said Aizbalts. This proportion has been decreasing by the year, but it still is higher than in Western Europe and Nordic countries.

According to amendments to the Natural Resources Tax Law that Saeima passed on December 15, 2016 the natural resources tax will be growing annually until 2020. This year, the tax increased to EUR 35 per ton, while next year the tax will increase to EUR 43. In addition, according to the Public Utilities Commission's decision, new tariffs at Getlini landfill will come into force on January 1 next year, all of which will increase the cost of waste management.

Starting January 1, 2019 Clean R's household waste management tariff per cubic meter will be EUR 12.48 (with value added tax) in Stopini Region, EUR 13.49 in Ikskile Region, EUR 15.49 in Incukalns Region, EUR 17.93 in Seja Region, EUR 14.57 in Kekava Region, EUR 15.15 in Carnikava Region. In Riga, Lielvarde, Ogre and Kegums, the tariff will increase by approximately EUR 4.17 (with VAT).
