Saeima committee suggests tasking government with finding funds for increasing healthcare employees' wages

RIGA, Dec 5 (LETA) - A proposal to alter transitional regulations on financing for healthcare, which stipulate that the government will have to provide financing for increasing healthcare employees' wages by 20 percent on the average during the next three years, will be reviewed at a Saeima plenary session next week, Saeima Social and Employment Matters Committee decided today.

The committee's members decided unanimously that the amendments would be reviewed as urgent, furthermore, they will be reviewed in both first and second readings during Saeima's plenary session on December 13.

The Finance Ministry will present its report on the legislation by December 12.

Anita Cemme from the Finance Ministry told the Saeima committee that there were no funds in the 2019 budget for such a steep increase in healthcare employees' salaries.

The Saeima committee nevertheless decided that ensuring allocation of budget funds for increasing healthcare employees' wages would be Saeima's "political task" for the government.
