    Latvia's construction output grows 21.9 percent in 2018

    RIGA, Feb 11 (LETA) - In 2018, the Latvian construction sector’s output grew 21.9 percent against the same period a year to EUR 2.179 billion at current prices, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) informed on Monday.

    Construction output rise was observed in all sectors – construction of buildings (25.6 percent), civil engineering (11.6 percent), and specialized construction activities (27.8 percent).

    The most significant output increase (2.1 times) was registered in specializd construction activities related to building completion and finishing (plastering, floor and wall covering, painting and glazing, etc.) as well as demolition and site preparation (75.6 percent).

    In civil engineering, an upturn was recorded in construction of roads and railways (22.5 percent) and construction of utility projects (15.3 percent), while downturn (35.2 percent) in construction of other civil engineering projects that includes waterways, port and river piers, industrial complexes, open-air sports grounds.

    Compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, construction output in the fourth quarter of 2018 increased by 21.4 percent (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices). Rise was recorded in construction of buildings (16.6 percent) and specialized construction activities (47 percent), while civil engineering fell by 1.1 percent.

    The most notable output increase was registered in specialized construction activities: demolition and site preparation (2.3 times), building completion and finishing (2.1 times), and other specialized construction activities (37 percent).

    Decline in civil engineering was influenced by the drop in construction of utility projects (9.5 percent) and construction of other civil engineering projects (56.1 percent).

    Compared to the previous quarter, in the fourth quarter of 2018 construction output (according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices) grew by 8.7 percent, of which construction of buildings by 9 percent and specialized construction activities by 18.6 percent, while civil engineering reduced by 5.6 percent.
