Three candidates to officially run for president - Levits, Jansons, Smits

RIGA, May 14 (LETA) – Three candidates have been officially nominated for the post of the Latvian president - Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice, endorsed by the coalition, Chief Ombudsman Juris Jansons nominated by the Union of Greens and Farmers, and Didzis Smits (KPV LV) supported by the internal opposition of KPV LV party.

The Saeima press service reported that official nomination of presidential candidates ended at midnight.

Levits is likely to receive 55 votes in Saeima, which would be sufficient to elect him president. He is supported by the National Alliance, the New Conservative Party and For Development/For who together have 41 votes. Also New Unity with eight seats at the parliament plans to support Levits, as well as a number of lawmakers from KPV LV.

The opposition Harmony party said earlier that it will not nominate its own candidate, but will evaluate moral values of other candidates.

Incumbent President Raimonds Vejonis said he would not run for a second term in office.

Parliament factions will still discuss whether the presidential election will be held in late May or early June.
