National Alliance to nominate opera singer Puntulis for culture minister

RIGA, June 10 (LETA) - National Alliance has decided to nominate opera singer and Riga City Council member Nauris Puntulis for culture minister.

National Alliance's board and Saeima group both unanimously supported Puntulis' candidacy at their respective meetings.

National Alliance's Chairman Raivis Dzintars told reporters after a meeting of the party's board today that many potential candidates had been discussed during the meeting, including National Alliance members as well as persons not affiliated with the party. In Dzintars' opinion, Puntulis is a very good candidate as he has been a member of the National Alliance for a long time and worked at the Culture Ministry as an advisor.

The outgoing Culture Minister Dace Melbarde (National Alliance) also supports Puntulis and will offer him advice and support in his new job, added Dzintars.

Speaking to reporters, Puntulis said that he believed he would make a good minister and stressed that increasing cultural workers' salaries would be one of his priorities.

Melbarde is planning to step down as the culture minister by June 19, the minister's advisor Lita Kokale told LETA.

Puntulis, born in 1961, has a Master's degree from Latvian Academy of Music, he has also been a member of the popular rock band Perkons for ten years.

Puntulis has been a member of the Riga City Council since 2013.

As reported, the current Culture Minister Melbarde has been elected to the European Parliament.
