    Number of marriages registered in Latvia grow by 260 in H1

    RIGA, July 18 (LETA) - The number of new marriages registered in Latvia in the first half of this year grew by 260 against the same period a year ago to 4,730, according to the provisional data released on Thursday by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

    The CSB said that Latvia’s marriage rate had stabilized over the past three years, with an average of 13,000 marriages registered per annum.

    Meanwhile, the number of births in Latvia has been declining for the fourth year already. In 2018, the number of births dropped by 1,500 from 2017. The number of babies born in the first half of this year dropped by 891 year-on-year to 8,927.

    The death rate has remained unchanged in recent years, averaging at 28,000 a year. The number of deaths recorded in the first half of 2019 dropped by 673 from the same period a year ago to 14,358.

    Natural increase in Latvia remained negative. As the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, the population declined by 5,431 people (over the corresponding period of 2018 – by 5 213) in the first six months of 2019.

    On April 1, 2019, the provisional number of Latvia’s inhabitants was 1. 913 million.
