Liquidation of acid waste ponds at Incukalns nearing completion

RIGA, Oct 10 (LETA) - Liquidation of acid waste ponds at Incukalns is nearing completion as more than 70 percent of sulfuric acid tar has been removed from the southern pond, while removal of sulfuric acid tar waste from the northern pond has been completed and 60 percent of polluted groundwater has been pumped out, representatives from Incukalns Eko company told reporters today.

Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Juris Puce (For Development/For) emphasized that Incukalns sulfuric tar ponds were the most polluted place in Latvia. This has been an environmental threat for decades. Elimination of the acid waste ponds was a complicated project that was now entering its final stages, said the minister.

The Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry will make sure that the project be implemented on time, said Puce.

The State Environmental Service's Director General Elita Baklane-Ansberga said that the project was proceeding according to the plan. "The project makes maximum use of resources, for instance, sulfuric tar is recycled into fuel and burned," Baklane-Ansberga said.

As reported, the project was originally meant to be completed by the end of 2015.
