    Latvia finishes EuroBasket in overall fifth place, which is best ever finish since restoration of independence

    ISTANBUL (Turkey), Sept 14 (LETA) - After Serbia defeated Italy and Russia defeated Greece last night in the quarterfinals of the European Men's Basketball Championships (EuroBasket), the tournament's final standings 5th to 8th were made known.

    Latvia finished the tournament in overall fifth place, which is the best result since the restoration of independence.

    Latvia's best result in the past were two eighth place finishes in 2001 and 2015.

    Latvia also triumphed in the first ever EuroBasket in 1935, and placed second in the tournament in 1939.

    In the tournament's semifinals, Slovenia will take on Spain tonight, while Serbia will play Russia tomorrow.
