Riga City Council announces new tender for municipal waste management in Riga

RIGA, Nov 21 (LETA) - The Riga City Council's Housing and Environment Department has announced a new open tender for municipal waste management in Riga, while at the same time the municipality will ensure that waste management services are provided to Riga residents until the tender procedure is over, the Riga City Council told LETA.

Evija Pinke, head of the Housing and Environment Department of the Riga City Council, confirmed to LETA that the tender was announced in accordance with all the applicable and valid regulations. The Riga City Council's previous rules stipulating that Riga is to be divided into four areas for waste management purposes have been turned down by the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry.

Pinke also said that, under the new rules of the tender, there will be three waste management areas in Riga, and for each area one bidder will be selected to provide its services there.

According to the municipality, contracts with new waste management companies will be signed for a period of seven years.

According to Riga City Council, bids will be evaluated taking into account the municipal waste management tariffs offered by the applicants, as well as provision of specialized equipment for waste management service and the possibility of separate collection of biodegradable waste.

At the same time, in order to ensure continuity of waste management services in Riga, the Housing and Environment Department will also conduct negotiations with all waste managers operating in the city to ensure that waste management services are provided in Riga after December 11 also, when the emergency situation in the city expires.
