LONDON, Aug 2 (LETA) - Today, Latvian beach volleyball pair Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins defeated Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands 2-0 (21:14, 21:18) in their final group match at the London Olympics, thus triumphing in Group E.
Plavins/Smedins won the group with three wins and zero losses, and has advanced to the Olympic tournament's knock-out stage.
Both pairs had already guaranteed themselves a place in the tournament's final 16 before today's match.
Meanwhile, Latvia's other beach volleyball pair Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Ruslans Sorokins finished in third place in Group D with two wins and one loss, and has a good chance to advance to the knock-out stage as one of the two best third place finishers.
The top two finishers in every group will advance to the tournament's final 16, as well as the two best third place finishers.
Today is the last day of the beach volleyball tournament's group stage, after which the pairings for the final 16 will be known.
