Saeima committee finally supports amendments on president being elected by open parliamentary vote

RIGA, Sept 13 (LETA) - After failing to gather a quorum yesterday, the Saeima's Legal Affairs Committee today finally supported Constitutional amendments which stipulate that Saeima will elect the president of Latvia by open vote.

Saeima previously supported the amendments in principle.

Parliament will now review these amendments in the second and third readings.

If the vote takes place in line with the timetable prepared by the Saeima Legal Committee, the final vote on these Constitutional amendments by Saeima could take place on October 4.

As reported, the Saeima on May 17 sent to the committees for revision the amendments to the Constitution, proposed by the opposition Latvian Alliance of Regions (LRA), to change the presidential election procedure so that the parliament would elect the President of Latvia in an open vote instead of a secret ballot.
