RIGA, June 23 (LETA) - The "Ligo!" midsummer night holiday will be celebrated all around Latvia tonight; traditionally, revelers will make crowns of oak leaves and flowers, sing "Ligo!" songs and gather at bonfires.
Various traditions have to be observed on "Ligo!" night. One of them - "Ligo!" songs, or national folksongs, in honor of Janis. Every man named Janis has to wear a crown made of oak leaves.
Bonfires are lit after dark. It is believed that any person who touches a fire on "Ligo!" night will be in good health up until the next "Ligo!" holiday, and that the people by the fire and the fields where the fires are lit will be blessed with prosperity and fertility.
"Ligo!" night is also a night of magic; fortune-telling is very popular. Most importantly, one must not sleep on "Ligo!" night, or else the person will be sleepy all year.
