Filipino residents try to salvage books at a flooded pedestrian under pass in Manila, Philippines, 07 August 2012. Torrential rain and massive flooding in the Philippine capital and northern provinces forced thousands to flee their homes while hundreds more were stranded on their rooftops as the muddy waters rose. The weather bureau said the rains were caused by the south-west monsoon, enhanced by Typhoon Saola, which battered the northern and central Philippines last week, causing at least 53 deaths.
