EPA 2012-08-06 13:08:08 Supporting Biodiversity: The Traditional hay harvest in the Carpathian Mountains
(08/22) A Romanian farmer loads a pile of hay into his horse-pulled cart in the village of Fundata, near Brasov city, 200 km north of Bucharest, Romania, 05 July 2012. The Southern Carpathian Mountains are part of the Transylvania region and support a rich variety of plants and animals. On these high altitude pasture hills, Romanian farmers are still using the traditional manual way of harvesting hay. There have been increasing efforts at national and European Union level to preserve this low intensity or High Nature Value (HNV) farming which supports the astounding biodiversity in these mountain hay meadows. This fits in with the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-20 which aims to significantly reduce biodiversity loss worldwide.
