EPA 2012-08-18 12:45:29 India bans bulk text messages after rumours spark city exodus
North-eastern Indians wait with their belongings as they arrive by a special train from Karnataka state at Guwahati railway station in Guwahati city, India, 18 August 2012. Gripped by rumour-fuelled fears of impending attacks, people from the North-East India continued to flee southern cities despite assurances of safety from the state governments. Natives of Assam and other north-eastern states many of whom had moved to southern cities such as Bangalore to work have been leaving in droves since rumours of targeted violence started spreading 15 August by text message and social media. India took the emergency move of banning bulk mobile phone message for 15 days, in an attempt to stem panic after rumours of attacks had led to a mass exodus of some 20,000 people from cities in the south.
