Solly Phetoe of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) speaks following a press conference by representatives of Lonmin, the world's third-largest platinum mining company, on August 20, 2012, in Marikana. Clashes erupted on August 16 and in previous days at the Marikana platinum mine, with clashes between striking workers asking for wage increases and police having left 44 people dead. Lonmin, the world's third-largest platinum miner, said workers on a wildcat strike who fail to report for duty on August 21 could be fired. The National Union of Mineworkers, whose clash with the rival upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union precipitated the deadly violence at the Marikana mine, was founded by the most well-known member of Lonmin's board, South African businessman Cyril Ramaphosa, 59, a member of the ruling African National Congress famous for his business success.
