EPA 2012-04-26 15:45:47 Ukraine begins construction of new Chernobyl protective shelter .
A general view of the construction site of a new protective shelter over the remains of the Chernobyl nuclear power station, on the 26th anniversary of the world's worst atomic energy accident on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, in Ukraine, 26 April 2012. Reports state that the new concrete and steel shell to be built over the still-radioactive remains of a reactor that melted down as a result of the accident will stand 105 metres tall, have a length of 150 metres and width of 260 metres. The structure will be built over the now-decaying containment vessel built in 1986, and called by Ukrainians the 'Sarcophagus.' The new structure and adjacent support facilities, among them a nuclear waste storage site, should cost some 1.31 US billion dollars and be complete by 2015, Ukrainian officials have said.
