According to media reports on 28 April, Clashes erupted between Syrian troops and deserters near the summer residence of President Bashar al-Assad in the northern city of Latakia, activists said, amid growing doubts over the fate of a UN-brokered peace plan. Activists also said the deserters were from the presidential palace guards. The opposition has reported a large number of defections from the Syrian army since the pro-democracy uprising started in the country in March 2011.
