Thousands of students, teachers and parents of pupils demonstrate against spending cuts in Barcelona, southeastern Spain, 22 May 2012. School doors were sealed with silicone, traffic was disrupted, and teachers, students and parents held assemblies as teachers went on strike across Spain to protest spending cuts. However, the disruptions were the exception to a relatively calm day, with the main disagreement centring on how many school workers had heeded the call to participate. Trade unions said there was 80-per-cent participation, while the government said only 20 per cent of school staff had joined the strike. EPA/ALEJANDRO GARCIA
