According to media reports, the Yemeni army regained control of two main strongholds of al-Qaeda militants in the towns of Jaar and Zinjibar, following surprise offensives against the militants on 12 June. The militants had seized several towns in Abyan during a popular uprising against the 34-year rule of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
