China's one-child policy has come under scrutiny after reports circulated online of local family planning staff in Ankang city of the northern province of Shaanxi, forcibly aborted the child of a woman who was seven months pregnant. Since China's family-planning policy was introduced in 1978, many local officials have enforced abortions and sterilizations in a bid to ensure that most families have only one child.
