Recently-wedded Jyoti, who left her marital home in protest due to the lack of toilets in the households, looks on during a ceremony as she returns to her in-laws residence at Vishnupur village in Maharaj Ganj, some 30 kms from Gorakhpur in India's Uttar Pradesh state, on June 27, 2012, following construction of toilets by sanitation nonprofit Sulabh International. Three newly-wed brides who left their marital homes because of sanitation concerns were each rewarded with 200,000 rupees (3,500 USD) and the costruction of new toilets in their in-laws residences for taking a stand on sanitation in rural India. Lack of toilets and other proper sanitation costs India nearly USD 54 billion a year through hygiene-related illnesses, lost productivity and other factors, a World Bank study has found. Women in rural areas suffer the most where they have to wait for the cover of darkness to relieve themselves in the open, according to Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International.
