An Iraqi man stands amongst the rubble of the dilapidated headquarters of the British army command under Sir Charles Townshend, built some 150-years-ago during the period of the Ottoman Empire, in the city of Kut, about 180Km to the south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad on July 1, 2012. In 1915, Townshend came under siege with his men from Turkish and German forces, four attempts to push the enemy troops back resulted in some 23,000 casualties and the largest single surrender of troops in British history to that point.
