EPA 2012-08-20 16:00:39 No decision on problematic Belgian nuclear reactor until October
A general view of the nuclear power plant in Doel, Belgium, 20 August 2012. A decision on what should happen to a Belgian nuclear reactor with potential defects in its core tank will not be made before October, nuclear safety authorities said 16 August after meeting regulators from other countries. Experts from Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States attended the talks in Brussels, which were also observed by European Union officials. Last month, the Belgian government adopted a nuclear phaseout plan that foresees the shutting down of Doel 3 in 2022 and the complete abandonment of nuclear energy by 2025. But if Doel 3 were now unable to enter back into service, authorities would likely have to amend their phase-out plans to make up for the loss of capacity. EPA/OLIVIER HOSLET
