Police stand guard as miners arrested for allegedly being involved in violent clashes between protesting workers and police at the Marikana mine board police vehicules after appearing at the Ga-Rankuwa courthouse, 37kms from Pretoria, on August 20, 2012. Women chanted and danced on the dusty road, hoping to catch a glimpse of their husbands, fathers or sons who face charges of public violence and even murder after the Marikana mine killings. Clashes erupted on August 16 and previous days at the Marikana platinum mine, with violence between striking workers asking for wage increases and police having left 44 people dead. Lonmin, the world's third-largest platinum mining company which runs the Marikana mine, said workers on a wildcat strike who fail to report for duty on August 21 could be fired. AFP PHOTO / STRINGER
