Thalassaemic children hold posters as they participate in an awareness rally on World Thalassaemia Day in the Eastern Indian city of Calcutta, 08 May 2012. Hundreds of children and parents participated in the rally organised by the Thalassaemia and AIDS prevention Society. It is reported that in India there are over 100,000 cases of major thalassaemia and nearly 30 million carriers of the thalassaemia gene which is an inherited and non infectious blood disorder.
