EPA 2012-05-26 14:36:03 Quake damages Italy's Parmesan production
Parmesan cheese (Parmigiano-Reggiano) damaged by the earthquake is being sold at a lower price by the social cooperative 'La Cappelletta' from San Possidonio, Modena, Italy, 26 May 2012. The earthquake that struck northern Italy at the weekend killed seven people and crumbled dozens of medieval churches, towers and castles. It also caused severe damage to one of the region's most precious products. Hundreds of thousands of wheels of Parmesan and Grana Padano cheese came tumbling down from shelves when the magnitude 6 quake shook large swathes of the Emilia Romagna region. Some 300,000 wheels of Parmesan were destroyed, a tally amounting to a staggering 10 per cent of the country's annual production. The damage to the Parmesan and Grana Padano industries is part of a total of more than 200 million euros (253 million dollars) in losses caused by the quake to the agriculture sector of Emilia Romagna.
