The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said on 27 May that its forces and Somali government troops secured the road between the capital Mogadishu and the town of Afgoye, the al-Shabab stronghold near the capital, after taking control of the Afgoye town itself on 25 May, making it safe for the aid groups to operate in the area where some 400,000 internally displaced people are said to be living.
