An elderly low-income earner pushes a trolley with cardboard bundles for recycling past a luxury designer boutique in Hong Kong's Central district, Hong Kong, China, 19 June 2012. According to recently announced Hong Kong figures, the gap between the rich and poor in Hong Kong, as measured on an internationally recognised scale, now stands at its widest for thirty years. Hong Kong's 'Gini coefficient', measured on a scale from 0 to 1 (on which a higher score indicates greater income inequality), has now reached 0.537 - based on income data collected by the Hong Kong government in 2011. The city's de-facto mayor, Chief Executive-elect Leung Chun-ying, has pledged to make poverty relief a key policy of his incoming administration on 01 July 2012. In line with this he 19 June 2012 announced the establishment of a 'Preparatory Task Force on the Commission of Poverty'. EPA/ALEX HOFFORD
