Hundreds of opponents of a newly-passed legislation giving the Russian language equal status with Ukrainian clashed with Police in an attempt to prevent President Viktor Yanukovych from signing it into law. Some 300 protesters that had gathered on the front steps of a Kiev convention centre where Yanukovych was scheduled to speak with media rejected orders to disperse and fought with phalanxes of Police attempting to remove them from the scene. The browl ended after a Yanukovych spokesman informed the crowd the President had cancelled the press conference, which was to have been a nationally-televised report on Ukraine's performance as a co-host of the Euro 2012 soccer championship.
