EPA 2012-07-23 19:40:55 Situation after attack on UN-guarded refugee camp in Ivory Coast
Seen through a ripped tent wall a UN soldier patrols in the devastated refugee camp that witnessed the death of at least six people, in Duekoue, Ivory Coast, 23 July 2012. It is claimed that members of a local traditional hunters known as 'dozos' toke part in the killings. The attack on the UN-protected camp took place on 20 July and killed at least six and wounded dozens when angry youths reportedly set fire to the refugee camp in what seems to be a tribal revenge attack despite the presence of the UN peacekeepers. Bert Koenders, the UN secretary-general special representative to the Ivory Coast, was quoted as saying 'this criminal act is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian rights'.
