EPA 2012-08-06 13:12:38 Supporting Biodiversity: The Traditional hay harvest in the Carpathian Mountains
(17/22) A Romanian farmer walks uphill with his scythe after harvesting the hay from his family grassland, in the village of Magura, Romania, 05 July 2012. Magura lies near Brasov city, 180 km north of Bucharest. It is surrounded by the Southern Carpathian Mountains and is part of the Transylvania region. On these high altitude pasture hills, Romanian farmers are still using the traditional manual way of harvesting hay. There have been increasing efforts at national and European Union level to preserve this low intensity or High Nature Value (HNV) farming which supports the astounding biodiversity in these mountain hay meadows. This fits in with the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-20 which aims to significantly reduce biodiversity loss worldwide.
